You may know him as one of the best point guards in the league.
Or maybe you know Elfrid Payton because he finished 4th in the Rookie of the Year voting his first year.
Or…..it could just be that you know him as that one guy with the cool hair.
Either way, Eflrid Payton is a name you should know. One of the NBA’s brightest young stars, he’s a guy young players should study to get better.
From his crazy ballhandling to the court vision that has him in double digits in assists almost every night, this guy is clearly a star.
But what you don’t know from watching Payton, is that he only had one offer coming out of school, Louisiana Lafayette. Payton has been overlooked his whole career, so gather around youngins and learn how this young star made his path.
High School: John Ehret High School (Morerro, Louisiana)
Position: Point Guard
Weight: 170 Lbs
Recruiting Ranking: 0 Stars
Growing up in the New Orleans region, it’s sometimes easy to get overshadowed by all of the young basketball talents in the area. For Elfrid Payton, who didn’t hit 6 foot until his junior year, it didn’t help that he was a late bloomer either.
Everyone always knew Payton was a baller, but it was more of a “That guy is really good for high school. Very tough to guard, but not quite good enough to play college.”
No one really expected anything out of Payton, but that was just because he’s not much of a self-promoter and didn’t get to play in front of many people.
So with high school finishing up, Payton took the one offer he had to continue playing and headed 2 hours down the road to Lafayette.
Once at college, he continued to work on his game. Finally growing into his body, he started to get stronger and began to really dominate the game. By the end of his junior year, Payton was now viewed as an NBA prospect.
Ya, you read that right.
One offer to NBA draft prospect…..it happens.
So with the 10th overall pick in the 2014 draft, the Philadelphia 76ers drafted Elfrid Payton. With an immediate trade to the Orland Magic, Payton officially found his new home.
And just like that, the legend of the Under-Recruited star was born.
Think your dreams of becoming a pro sound crazy?
Maybe they are, maybe they aren’t.
But if you don’t continue to push for your dream, you’ll never know.
